#CroakeyRead

#CroakeyREAD is an annual event, held on the longest night of each year.

Inspired by the Icelandic Christmas tradition of reading through the night, this is a virtual and IRL event where we do an all-nighter – reading, sharing and discussing our favourite books and writing.

We read with purpose – to highlight issues, to pay tribute to the work of writers, and for social pleasure and interaction.

The hashtag, #CroakeyREAD, is also used throughout the year to profile books likely to be of interest or use to our readers and networks. If you would like to pitch suggestions for books to be reviewed at Croakey, please contact Croakey’s Books Editor, Dr Ruth Armstrong – @DrRuthAtLarge.

Aims of #CroakeyREAD include:

• provide a social journalism service to our readers, followers and networks.

• develop a platform for discussions about health-related matters and key Croakey topics, eg health equity, social determinants, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges and perspectives, public health, public interest journalism, neoliberalism, climate change, the environment.

• develop a platform for sharing news of good books, promoting diverse authors.

• provide a platform for engagement with Croakey and our wider mission.

• build a platform for fund-raising to support public interest journalism.

Public interest journalism is an important determinant of health, due to its roles in accountability and holding power to account, empowering communities, and contributing to health literacy. A strong public interest journalism sector contributes to planetary health and health equity, as well as healthier people, communities, societies, and systems of governance.
